Mi-28 "Night Hunter": unique maneuverability helps deceive air defense systems

MWM: Despite heavy armor, the Russian attack helicopter performs "loops" and flies sideways

The American publication Military Watch Magazine (MWM) published an article emphasizing the outstanding flight qualities of the Russian Mi-28 attack helicopter. According to the magazine's experts, its characteristics allow the aircraft to effectively counter modern air defense systems.

The Mi-28 can withstand a vertical overload of 2.8 g, while the Mi-24 can only handle 1.8 g, allowing it to make sharper turns. These completely unique flight characteristics enable the Mi-28 to perform aerobatic maneuvers such as a "loop," as well as to fly in ways that confuse air defense systems, for example at high speed sideways and backward.

The publication notes that the crew cockpit is equipped with powerful armor protection reinforced with ceramic elements, providing one of the highest survivability levels among attack helicopters. At the same time, the heavy armor did not prevent it from retaining exceptional maneuverability: the helicopter can perform rolls of up to 70 degrees (compared to 45–60 degrees for its predecessor, the Mi-24), and also withstand increased vertical overloads. Thanks to this, the Mi-28 can make much sharper and steeper turns.

The Mi-28, along with the Ka-52, belongs to the newest generation of attack helicopters fully developed in the post-Soviet period. Despite having more powerful armor than the American AH-64 Apache, the Russian aircraft offers noticeably better speed, maneuverability, and firepower. The helicopter can carry up to 16 anti-tank guided missiles or 80 unguided 80 mm rockets, making it a formidable means of engaging ground targets.
