Scammers take out microloans on Russians through a fake VPN

The victim grants access to the device by downloading the application from a link in the messenger

Fraudsters are distributing a fake VPN application in messengers that allows them to gain access to other people's phones and take out microloans on unsuspecting people. This is reported in the materials of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

The scheme is simple: the victim receives a link to download a VPN. After the transition, the download begins, and then the system asks to confirm the installation. The person agrees - and thereby gives scammers full access to the device and personal data.

Having gained control of the phone, fraudsters apply for microloans on behalf of the owner. He learns about the debts only when the money has already been debited.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs urges not to follow suspicious links, even if they come from acquaintances - accounts could be hacked.

Earlier it was reported that Russia does not plan to ban the use of VPN services. This was stated by the head of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Sergei Boyarsky. According to him, VPN is a tool with a dual nature: it carries certain risks, but at the same time has legitimate, useful applications.
