Diesel-electric vessel "Vasiliy Golovnin" delivered cargo to the Bharati station in the challenging ice conditions of Antarctica

A Russian Project 10620 vessel is providing logistics support for the Indian Antarctic expedition while approaches are blocked by icebergs

The diesel-electric vessel "Vasiliy Golovnin," operated by the transport group Fesco (part of the management perimeter of the Rosatom state corporation), has completed its passage to the Indian Antarctic station Bharati as part of the 2025–2026 seasonal expedition.

The vessel delivered a cargo complex to the station, including scientific equipment, food supplies, and fuel. At the same time, a personnel rotation was carried out: new members of the Indian expedition landed ashore and will ensure the station's operation and the conduct of research until the next navigation season. The previous team of scientists was taken on board for transportation back.

The approach to the station, located in Prydz Bay of the Cooperation Sea, is complicated by a concentration of drifting icebergs. Because of this, "Vasiliy Golovnin" is maintaining position five miles off the coast and is transferring cargo and personnel by helicopter during daylight hours. The stay in this area is planned until early March, after which the vessel will continue its passage to the Maitri station.

The vessel's crew is also assisting Indian specialists in carrying out hydrographic surveys of the coastal waters.

"Vasiliy Golovnin" is an icebreaking transport diesel-electric vessel of Project 10620, Vitus Bering type. The vessel was built in 1988 in the USSR.
