Specialists from Gazprom Neft discovered the largest oil field in the past 30 years in the Arctic zone of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. This was announced by the company’s head, Alexander Dyukov.
The geological reserves of the new field amount to about 55 million tonnes of oil.
The resource base of our country is still far from being fully explored. In the Arctic zone, in Eastern Siberia, and in many other territories, there are still opportunities to search for new large and super-large hydrocarbon fields.
According to Alexander Dyukov, the company continues active geological exploration work in all its operating regions, using digital models of subsurface formations and analyzing data with the help of artificial intelligence. The discovery of this field is an important step toward achieving the goals of Russia’s Energy Strategy through 2050, in which the development of new projects in the Arctic is a priority area.
The field is located within the Yuzhno-Novoprtovsky and Saletinsky blocks in the Yamal District of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. During the drilling of an exploration and appraisal well at a depth of 2.7 km, commercial inflows of low-sulfur and low-viscosity oil, gas, and condensate were obtained. The field was named in honor of Aleksei Kontorovich, one of the founders of the national scientific school of oil and gas geology.
Before the discovery, specialists conducted three years of research on the blocks using 2D and 3D seismic surveys, and also created geological and hydrodynamic models of underground resources. Drilling was carried out around the clock from the well construction control center in Tyumen, located more than 1,300 km from Yamal.
