Revival of a legend: major overhaul of the ER-791-90 steam locomotive begins at the Michurinsk plant

The locomotive built in 1955 will become the heart of a special tourist train

At the Michurinsk locomotive repair plant "Milorem," a major project has begun to fully restore the historic ER-791-90 series steam locomotive, built in 1955. The order for the unique restoration came from OAO "Rossiiskie zheleznye dorogi".

The locomotive, withdrawn from service in 2002 and kept in reserve for more than 20 years, is awaiting its second birth. Its last major overhaul was carried out almost half a century ago — in 1976, making the current restoration an extremely complex technical challenge.

The veteran steam locomotive, withdrawn from regular service more than 20 years ago (its last serious repair dates back to 1976), will receive a second life as part of a railway heritage preservation program. After all restoration work is completed, the machine will become a key element of a special retro train intended for tourist and excursion routes.

The restored locomotive will allow passengers to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the mid-20th century and travel to significant historical sites across Russia hauled by steam power. The project combines engineering traditions, restoration technologies, and the development of domestic tourism in railway transport.
