A method for modernizing T-72 and T-90 series tanks to create tank support fighting vehicles (BMPT) on their base has been invented in Russia. The document was posted in the database of the Federal Service for Intellectual Property (FIPS).
The developers proposed to sequentially dismantle the tank turret and install a special transition ring on the chassis. It allows integrating the BMPT combat module without deep modification of the hull.
After that, the vehicle will be equipped with turret protection with elements of dynamic protection, ZIP boxes, a fence for collecting links of automatic gun and machine gun belts, and additional equipment.
During the modernization, engineers only replace the fuel tanks, install a diesel generator unit, mount a rear-view camera, and update the driver's hatch with an emergency opening system. They also adjust the torsion shafts to ensure the specified hull trim.
The technology allows using tanks stored at storage bases without large-scale design changes. This reduces the labor intensity of the conversion and speeds up the production of fire support vehicles.
It should be noted that the only BMPT in service with the Russian army is the Terminator manufactured by Uralvagonzavod. The presented footage suggests that it is precisely about them. Previously, this equipment also began to be covered with anti-drone protection.
