Will Russia Create a Competitor to Boeing and Airbus?

The technologies for a long-haul aircraft already exist; all that remains is to launch serial production

Aviation expert Roman Gusarov stated that Russia has all the necessary technologies for the development and production of long-haul passenger aircraft. According to him, the domestic aviation industry already has solutions today that make it possible to fly across the entire country — for example, from Kaliningrad to Magadan — on a single aircraft.

These are Il-96-300 aircraft. Yes, there are very few of them actually in operation, and they are not present on commercial routes, but after some time we will still solve this task.

Despite the extremely limited number of these aircraft in commercial operation, Gusarov noted, they are technically capable of providing non-stop flights over long distances.

The expert emphasized that in the world only Boeing and Airbus are engaged in the production of long-haul aircraft; however, Russia retains technological sovereignty and remains one of the leaders in this field. The issue is not the absence of competencies, but time and strategic priorities — the task of restoring a full-fledged fleet of domestic long-haul airliners will be solved in the near future.

Earlier, www1.ru reported that Russia will need up to 10 years for full import substitution of the civil aircraft fleet.
