"Zorkiy" vs. Starlink: Why Russia Needs Its Own Satellites Without Internet

Information about the purpose of spacecraft in the media turned out to be erroneous

The new Russian satellites of the «Zorkiy» series do not provide broadband Internet access, and conceptually they are not an analogue of the American Starlink system, as stated by a large number of publications and media outlets. This was pointed out by the Telegram channel «Russian Weapon».

The authors explained that the «Zorkiy» satellites are ultra-compact Earth remote sensing satellites carrying a professional camera-telescope with high-precision resolution.

In other words, they are engaged in photographing the surface of the planet for various purposes, and do not provide access to broadband satellite Internet, like Starlink.

Roscosmos provided an exact quote from the head of the state corporation, Dmitry Bakanov, who explained the purpose of «Zorkiy». But, as it turned out, not everyone looks at the original source.

The «Zorkiy» satellite is a device that takes pictures from space, and on the basis of these images, digital maps are created, which are then used by unmanned vehicles.

The Russian analogue of Starlink is the « рассвет » project to create a low-orbit satellite broadband Internet system from the company «Bureau 1440». Presumably, the project may be launched as early as 2030, its cost is estimated at 445 billion rubles.
