A pair of Italian Air Force fighters, stationed at the Ämari airbase in Estonia as part of NATO's air policing mission on the alliance's eastern flank, were scrambled to escort a Russian Be-200 amphibious aircraft over the Baltic Sea. This was reported by the Allied Air Command.
According to the command, the Russian aircraft took off from the Leningrad region and entered international airspace over the Baltic. NATO fighters carried out the standard procedure of identifying and escorting the aircraft until it left the area of increased attention.
As noted at the alliance headquarters, in 2025, NATO countries' fighters made about 500 alert sorties to intercept and escort Russian military aircraft – the highest figure in the last five years, indicating an increased intensity of Russian air activity near the alliance's borders.
