Russian Railways increased passenger traffic to 1.31 billion people in 2025

The company expanded suburban transportation volumes despite a decline in long-distance travel

At the end of 2025, Russian Railways (RZD) served more than 1.31 billion passengers, which is 1.9% more than a year earlier. This was reported on the holding's official Telegram channel.

The main contribution to the growth in passenger traffic came from suburban services: 1.1835 billion people were transported, which is 2.2% higher than the 2024 figure. At the same time, long-distance travel volumes decreased by 0.6% and amounted to 126.7 million passengers.

The trend reflects steady demand for short routes, especially in large agglomerations, where rail transport remains a key element of urban and regional mobility. The decline in the number of long-distance passengers may be linked both to changing consumer preferences and to competition from aviation and bus transportation over medium and long distances. At the same time, there remains potential for growth through the modernization of rolling stock and the digitalization of services.
