It became known which districts of Moscow will be the first to receive new metro stations

Schemes from social networks turned out to be a myth: real plans for the development of the capital's metro

In recent months, various versions of schemes for the development of the Moscow metro have been actively discussed in social networks and the media. The reason for this was both official publications and alternative maps with links to unspecified sources. To clarify the situation, the urban development complex of Moscow spoke about the real plans for the development of the metro.

The capital's metro builders are currently working on several large projects at once. Some of them are already reflected in the official schemes on the portal of the urban development complex stroi.mos.ru. In addition, in August 2025, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin gave an interview to Komsomolskaya Pravda, where a scheme for the prospective development of lines until 2035 was published. It was after this that unofficial maps appeared, which the Moscow authorities do not confirm.

The Moscow Metro will primarily develop to the south and west: the capital's authorities have confirmed the construction and design of several metro lines with specific deadlines and budgets, and decisions have not yet been made on a number of areas discussed in social networks.

Rublevo-Arkhangelskaya Line

The key project remains the Rublevo-Arkhangelskaya metro line. The address-investment program of Moscow for 2025–2028 provides for 222.3 billion rubles for its construction. This is one of the most expensive and large-scale projects for the development of the Moscow metro in the coming years.

The first three stations of the line — "Zvenigorodskaya", "Narodnoye Opolcheniye" and "Boulevard of General Karbyshev" — are planned to be opened in 2026. They will be put into operation together with the stations "Delovoy Tsentr" and "Shelepikha", which previously operated as part of the Big Circle Line and were closed for reconstruction.

Construction will continue in 2027. It is planned to complete the stations "Serebryany Bor", "Strogino", "Lipovaya Roshcha", "Rublevo-Arkhangelskoye" and "Ilyinskaya". Two more stations — "Krasnogorsk" and "Emerald Hills" — are at the design stage, the timing of their construction has not yet been determined.

Troitskaya Line

The second major project is the Troitskaya metro line. Its first section from the "ZIL" station to "Novomoskovskaya" has already been built. Now we are talking about the second stage of development of the line, which will cover the southwestern territories of the capital.

As part of this stage, it is planned to build the stations "Sosenki", "Rakitki", "Desna", "Kedrovaya", "Vatutinki" and "Troitsk". The commissioning of this section is scheduled for 2029. The address-investment program of Moscow provides for 193 billion rubles for the construction of the Troitskaya line.

Biryulevskaya Line

The construction of the Biryulevskaya metro line was previously repeatedly announced by Sergei Sobyanin. This line should connect the Biryulevo district with the "ZIL" station of the Big Circle Line. On the official portal stroi.mos.ru it is still designated as promising.

According to the urban development complex of Moscow, the main volume of design has already been completed. The construction of the first section and the stations "ZIL", "Dream Island" and "Klenovy Boulevard" has already begun, they are planned to be opened in 2028. In the near future, the authorities intend to start building the stations "Moskvorechye", "Luganskaya", "Kaspiyskaya", "Lipetskaya", "Lebedyanskaya" and "Biryulevo". Their commissioning is scheduled for 2029. The total amount of financing for the line in the AIP of Moscow is 279.8 billion rubles.

Extension of the Sokolnicheskaya Line

The Sokolnicheskaya metro line is planned to be extended to the north, to the Yaroslavsky district. The project provides for the construction of the stations "MGSU" and "Kholmogorskaya". Currently, the preparation of the territory planning project for the future section is underway.

The address-investment program of Moscow provides for 66.3 billion rubles for the extension of the Sokolnicheskaya line. The timing of the start and completion of construction has not yet been specified.

Projects without approved solutions

There is significantly less official information on the remaining directions. In August 2025, Moskomarkhitektura announced the start of pre-project work on the extension of the Filevskaya line from the "Kuntsevskaya" station to Skolkovo. On the official maps of the mayor's office, this section includes the stations "Vereyskaya", "Belovezhskaya", "Skoltekh", "Skolkovo" and "Medical Center".

The urban development complex of Moscow clarified that a project for the route of the line and the location of stations is currently being developed. There are no specific dates for construction and opening yet. The AIP of Moscow has allocated 244 billion rubles for the extension of the Filevskaya line for the period 2026–2032.

Earlier, the extension of the Troitskaya line to the "Kinocluster" station, the connection of "Tretyakovskaya" and "Delovoy Tsentr" with the formation of a new central part of the Kalininsko-Solntsevskaya line, the extension of the Biryulevskaya line towards Vnukovo with 14 new stations and the construction of the Vlasyevskaya line from "Shcherbinka" to "Vlasyevo" were also discussed in the public space. According to the Moscow government, no official decisions on construction have been made on all these projects yet, although funds for some facilities have already been provided for in the address-investment program.

Today, the Moscow Metro includes 306 metro and MCC stations and 15 lines. On a weekday, more than 8 million passengers use the metro.
