Capacity of 5,000 tons per year: SIBUR receives approval for the construction of a pyrolysis plant in Nizhnekamsk

Chemical recycling will allow processing mixed plastics and obtaining secondary polymers for industry

SIBUR has received a positive conclusion from a non-state examination for the project to build a pyrolysis plant for mixed plastic raw materials with a capacity of 5 thousand tons per year. The facility will be built at the Nizhnekamskneftekhim site in Tatarstan. According to data from the state register of expert opinions, the document was issued on December 19 by the Prommash Test Expertise organization. The developer is Nizhnekamskneftekhim.

The project involves the introduction of chemical recycling (pyrolysis) technology, which will allow processing complex types of plastic waste and obtaining secondary polymers suitable for reuse, including in the food industry.

According to Maxim Remchukov, Director of SIBUR's Division for the Development of Secondary Processing and Sustainable Solutions, this direction will help to significantly reduce the amount of non-recyclable waste and increase the level of environmental sustainability of the industry.

The pyrolysis technology is based on heating mixed plastics — contaminated films, bags, packaging and other waste — at a temperature of 350–450 °C without oxygen. The result is secondary products, including rubbers and polyolefins, which can be used in the production of new materials.
