Light Aircraft for Regions: Russia to Create Domestic Analogs of Cessna

UAC Coordinates Creation of 3–5 Models with a Capacity of 5–9 Passengers by 2028

Russia plans to create 3–5 models of light passenger aircraft with 5–9 seats for regional routes up to 600 km. The project will be supported by the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC), attracting small design bureaus — including "Silver Wings", OSKB MAI, "First OKB" and "AeroVolga".

The goal of the development is to replace the American Cessna 208s, which were withdrawn from service due to sanctions. Designing one model will require more than 500 million rubles and 1.5–2 years, but without certification reform, the deadlines may be delayed.

Experts note that Russian training and light aircraft, such as the Yak-18T, have long ceased to meet the requirements of operators due to high fuel consumption and outdated design. As a result, Cessna has dominated even in state flight schools for decades.

To speed up the introduction of technology to the market, it is proposed to introduce parallel digital certification and create alternative certification centers with the support of Rosaviation. If successful, the first production vehicles may appear in just 2.5–3 years.
