The Russian Navy expects to receive the Project 971 nuclear submarine "Volk" in 2028. However, the fate of another submarine of the same project - "Samara" - remains a mystery.
Recently published footage from a ship repair enterprise demonstrated the condition of two of the three modernized submarines of Project 971 - the submarine "Bratsk".
According to estimates, the ship with a higher degree of readiness - "Bratsk", which they are probably trying to bring to an acceptable level, is approaching the testing stage. The submarine in an earlier stage is "Volk", the modernization of which, apparently, will require more time. The third submarine, "Samara", remains in the shadows, and its current position is unknown, which only adds intrigue to the overall process of updating this class of submarines.
Analysts note that such slow rates of modernization may be due to a number of factors, including difficulties with the supply of components, the need to master new technologies, and, possibly, the reallocation of resources to other, more priority projects. In any case, the fate of these submarines, once considered the pride of the fleet, attracts close attention both inside the country and abroad, where they are closely monitoring the restoration of the combat capability of the Russian submarine fleet.
In the North, the modernization of another submarine project - K-154 "Tiger" - continues to be "delayed". It has been at the Nerpa plant since 2019, and although the completion dates for the repair were previously announced as before 2023, the submarine never returned to service and actually "disappeared" from the public field.
Thus, to date, only two submarines of Project 971 remain in service with the Northern Fleet: "Vepr" and "Gepard". The rest continue to await repair and modernization, and the timing of their return to service remains uncertain.
