Russian nuclear scientists have completed scheduled preventive maintenance at the world's northernmost nuclear power plant — the floating nuclear heat and power plant (FNPP, Project 20870) "Akademik Lomonosov" — 14 days ahead of schedule. This was reported by the press service of the Rosenergoatom concern.
Specialists carried out scheduled maintenance of the main equipment, as well as restored the resource characteristics of the reactor plants. "Akademik Lomonosov" will be able to provide electricity to the Chaun-Bilibino energy hub even after the decommissioning of the Bilibino NPP in December 2025. The floating station will be able to cover more than 90% of the region's needs.
FNPP "Akademik Lomonosov" is located in the city of Pevek. The nuclear power plant, which includes 2 KLT-40S water-cooled nuclear reactors, was launched in the spring of 2020.
The main task of the project is to supply energy to mining enterprises in western Chukotka. Consumers include the Baimsky Mining and Processing Plant and companies developing in the Baimskaya ore zone.
