The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA, part of the UN system) is doing everything possible to help restore external power supply to the Zaporozhye NPP (ZNPP), according to Director General Rafael Grossi.
The IAEA press service reported that Grossi met with senior Russian officials. He discussed the nuclear safety situation at the ZNPP.
Europe's largest nuclear power plant has been without external power for more than a week, the longest such incident in the last 3.5 years.
According to Grossi, he is seeking to connect the nuclear facility to the power grid in the near future. Thanks to the fact that the ZNPP is powered by emergency diesel generators, "there is no immediate danger."
But the situation is clearly unstable from a nuclear safety point of view. No one will benefit from a nuclear accident.
The Zaporozhye NPP has been disconnected from external power supply since September 23. The IAEA fears a man-made disaster.
However, the station stated that only part of the diesel generators are used to maintain the operation of the facility. In addition, the ZNPP has stocks of fuel and spare parts to keep the generators in working order.
