According to the expert, the PD-26 engine is planned to be used on aircraft that are similar in characteristics to the heavy military transport aircraft Il-76 and the civilian airliner Il-96.
Mass production of this engine may begin within five years. This is the minimum time to prepare such production. The development of the PD-35 was already in the final stage – the test bench base, thanks to this experience there are no major risks in testing the PD-26. In practice, it is only necessary to scale the size of the engine, as well as individual components and assemblies. Most of the technical developments probably already exist and an industrial production base has been established.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, speaking at a meeting on engine building in Samara, stressed the importance of the speedy completion of the development and the start of mass production of the PD-26 turbojet engine.
Final tests of the PD-26 will be carried out on a flying laboratory. Currently, Il-76 aircraft are used for this purpose, in which one of the four engines is replaced.
