A resident of Seversk, Tomsk region, lost more than 5.5 million rubles after installing malicious software sent by a fraudster posing as a mobile operator employee. This was reported in the press service of the regional Ministry of Internal Affairs.
According to the police, an unknown girl called the man and inquired about the quality of the mobile Internet. She offered to "fix" the unstable connection and sent a link to install a program that supposedly reconfigures the SIM card. During the installation, the fraudster remained in touch, giving instructions on how to use the application.
After restarting his smartphone, the man discovered that more than 5.5 million rubles had disappeared from his bank accounts.
Problems with mobile Internet in Tomsk and the region have been observed since August 1. Mobile operators stated that the restrictions are not related to their work and may be caused by security measures. The Tomsk Region Department of Transport explained that difficulties with Internet access are caused by planned work on communication networks to improve security measures, the completion dates of which depend on the operational situation.
