The government has decided to allocate a quota of 5 GW for the construction of power units using Russian gas turbines as part of the modernization of old thermal power plants.
The projects are planned to be commissioned in 2029–2031, and the selection process itself will be moved to October 31, 2025. In addition, the mechanism for saving the lifespan of foreign turbines may be extended, and the maximum capital expenditures for modernization may be increased.
Allocating a quota and special conditions for thermal power plant projects with Russian gas turbines is necessary, but for machine builders, a quota of 5 GW looks like a very ambitious goal today
This is important because Russia seeks to reduce its dependence on foreign technologies in the energy sector and ensure the modernization of thermal power plants with its own turbines. However, the success of the program largely depends on whether domestic machine builders can increase production and complete the task on time.
