The outcome of a hypothetical air combat between the American fifth-generation fighter F-35 and the Russian Su-27 depends on the distance between them, analysts have calculated.
The two aircraft are complete opposites in avionics, airframe materials and weapons. The American F-35 was developed for strikes on ground targets in conditions of strong enemy air defense.
In contrast, the Su-27 interceptor fighter was created back in the USSR as a means of gaining superiority in the air.
If the Su-27 engages in air combat with the F-35, the latter will have an advantage beyond visual range, whereas otherwise victory will go to the former.
