Росморпорт расторг контракт на строительство двух ледоколов класса Icebreaker7 из-за санкций

Two vessels worth 18.5 billion rubles will not be built at the Onega plant

FSUE "Rosmorport" has terminated a contract with the Onega Shipbuilding Plant for the construction of two auxiliary icebreakers worth 18.5 billion rubles. The contract was concluded in July 2021, and the termination agreement was signed on June 10.

Onega Shipbuilding Plant

Icebreakers with a capacity of 12–14 MW of the Icebreaker7 class were to operate in solid ice up to 1.5 m and use diesel fuel or liquefied natural gas — such vessels have not yet been built in Russia.

Initially, the Turkish shipyard Kuzey Star was supposed to carry out the subcontract, but due to sanctions and problems with the supply of equipment, construction was not carried out. At the same time, Rosmorport had previously transferred an advance payment of 9.27 billion rubles to the Onega plant. The planned delivery dates for the vessels were postponed from 2024 to 2026.

The project involves the use of foreign components, including Azipod rudder propellers and Wartsila diesel generators, which now requires redesigning the vessels.
