Russia and Kazakhstan have started construction of the first nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan, Tengrinews reports. The plant is being built in the village of Ulken in the southeast of the country, with Rosatom as the general contractor. The launch is scheduled for 2035-2036.
Almasadam Satkaliyev, Chairman of the Kazakhstan Atomic Energy Agency, noted that the project will help the country train a new generation of specialists, strengthen the research base and create conditions for educational and technological development. He stressed that the nuclear power plant will become a strategic project, stimulating the development of the nuclear industry and regional infrastructure, as well as economic growth.
The decision to build a nuclear power plant in the Zhambyl district of the Almaty region was made in a referendum in 2024. In February 2025, the government approved the site for the plant, and in June, Rosatom took over the implementation of the project.
Currently, three nuclear power plant projects have been agreed upon in Kazakhstan, although the final location of two of them has not yet been approved.
