Admiral of the Northern Fleet Acknowledges Russia's Need for Nuclear Aircraft Carriers

However, the participation of such ships in global conflicts is not considered

The Russian Navy currently needs nuclear aircraft carriers, and the fate of the only aircraft carrier to date, "Admiral Kuznetsov," requires professional discussion. This opinion was expressed by the former commander of the Northern Fleet (1999-2001), Admiral Vyacheslav Popov.

According to him, at least one aircraft carrier is needed for the Pacific Fleet, and another for the Northern Fleet. It all depends on the assessment of threats, but the participation of aircraft carriers in world wars is not being considered today.

The world is changing; today, aircraft carriers and escort ships will become a big target for weapons in a global war.
Vyacheslav Popov, ex-commander of the Northern Fleet

He also noted that the decision on the future fate of the aircraft carrier "Admiral Kuznetsov" in the Russian fleet should be thoughtful and balanced.

We must not forget that billions of rubles have already been invested in the repair and modernization of the ship since 2017. And most importantly, if the aircraft carrier is disposed of, we will lose the school for training deck pilots.

Earlier www1.ru reported that the flagship of the Navy, the cruiser "Admiral Kuznetsov," may be scrapped.
