The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia has proposed revising the rules for allowing right-hand drive cars on the roads as part of a new strategy to improve road safety until 2030. The main reason is the identified risks associated with the operation of such cars. This is stated in the new Strategy for Improving Road Safety until 2030 and for the future until 2036.
The agency noted that there is an increase in imports of right-hand drive cars from eastern countries, which has led to an increase in the number of accidents involving them. In 2024, more than 10% of all accidents and related deaths are attributable to right-hand drive cars. At the same time, the risk of accidents for such cars is more than twice as high as the same indicator for left-hand drive cars.
The strategy also emphasizes the need to update the vehicle fleet and introduce modern safety systems that can reduce the influence of the human factor. The Ministry of Internal Affairs focuses on the development of automated driving technologies, which are already being tested in more than a third of the country's regions.
Vice President of the National Automobile Union, Yan Khaitseer, emphasized that right-hand drive cars are popular in Siberia and the Far East due to their availability and low cost. He expressed doubt about the effectiveness of banning right-hand drive cars, recalling unsuccessful attempts in the past and possible public discontent.
