On July 2, the crew of the International Space Station recorded a rare atmospheric phenomenon - a sprite. Unlike ordinary lightning, which strikes downwards, sprites rush into space to a height of up to 130 km.
Sprites are short-lived electrical discharges in the mesosphere that occur above powerful thunderstorms. They have a reddish hue and last only tenths of a second, making them difficult to observe from Earth.
