Head of Roscosmos announced that the ISS will operate until 2028

A joint decision on the fate of the station will be made by Russia and the United States

The International Space Station (ISS) will function until at least 2028. This was announced by the head of Roscosmos, Dmitry Bakanov, at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF). According to him, after 2028, Russia and the United States will make a joint decision on the future of the station, considering that its modules belong to both countries.

The ISS will serve for at least until 2028. And then we will decide together with us, because the modules [of the station] are Russian and American.

It should be reminded that the ISS is planned to be flooded in the Pacific Ocean when its service life comes to an end. This will happen in the area known as the "Oceanic Pole of Inaccessibility." The ISS will be slowed down using the engines of the Russian Zvezda module or Progress cargo ships to lower its orbit and direct it into the ocean.

Initially, Russia planned to complete its participation in the project and flood the station around 2028, while the decision on the timing of the flooding was supposed to be made closer to 2024. However, the deadlines are constantly shifting.
