"No grounds to lift restrictions": YouTube and Instagram remain blocked in Russia

On March 21, 2022, the Tverskoy Court of Moscow recognized the American company Meta Platforms Inc. as an extremist organization and banned its activities in the country. Instagram and Facebook were blocked in Russia at the request of the Prosecutor General's Office for censoring Russian media.

At the same time, on July 24, 2024, Rostelecom reported a deterioration in the quality of video uploads on YouTube, especially in high resolutions (HD, 4K). On July 25, Alexander Khinshtein, then head of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, announced preparations for measures to slow down YouTube uploads on stationary computers for violating Russian laws.

Users also reported that YouTube videos had practically stopped loading on devices connected to fixed-line networks. In December 2024, a new drop in YouTube speed was recorded in Russia, and according to Google statistics, video hosting traffic in the country fell by approximately 80% compared to the beginning of July.

*The activities of Meta Platforms Inc. in the implementation of social network products — Facebook and Instagram — are prohibited on the territory of the Russian Federation.

Earlier, www1.ru reported that Telegram for the first time broke into the lead in the ranking of the most popular Internet resources in Russia.
