Intercepting information and changing links: malicious extensions detected for popular browsers

These extensions have been installed by 1.5 million users worldwide

Specialists from LayerX Security have discovered four malicious extensions for Chrome and Edge browsers. These tools help improve sound control on web pages. Among them are: Sound Fixer, Sound Booster, Volume Master, and Sound Control.

In addition to working with sound, these extensions allowed their creators to: embed arbitrary elements into the interface, including advertising or fraudulent forms; gain access to user-entered data and track their activity; change links or redirect users to third-party web pages.

These extensions have been installed by 1.5 million users worldwide. Some of these extensions are classified as malicious in VirusTotal, but they are still available in the Chrome Web Store.

At the beginning of the year, there was a similar but larger-scale attack. At that time, at least 35 extensions for Chrome were identified. They were installed 2.5 million times.

Earlier, Russians were warned about fraudsters who steal signatures on the Internet. They create fake web pages that look like official websites of government agencies. For example, they copy the design and structure of the Rosfinmonitoring websites.
