Kazakhstan has chosen Rosatom as the leader of the consortium for the construction of the country's first nuclear power plant. The decision was made by an interdepartmental commission after a detailed analysis of proposals from leading global nuclear technology suppliers.
According to the Atomic Energy Agency of Kazakhstan, the Russian company presented the most optimal conditions in terms of timing, financing, and production localization. China's CNNC took second place, France's EDF third, and South Korea's KHNP fourth.
Thus, Rosatom has been identified as the leader of the international consortium for the construction of the first nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan.
The project involves the use of Russian VVER-1200 reactors. A Kazakh delegation previously visited the Leningrad NPP-2 to assess the technologies in action. An important aspect of the agreement was state export financing from Russia, which reduces the burden on the Kazakhstan budget. The transfer of technology and training of local specialists are also being discussed.
The plant is planned to be built near Lake Balkhash in the Almaty region — this area was chosen due to its proximity to energy-consuming centers and the availability of water resources for cooling the reactors.
