Cheap Gas Attracts: American Investor Offers to Buy Nord Stream 2 from Germany and Resume Operations

The idea was voiced at a meeting in the German Ministry of Economy

US investor Stephen P. Lynch proposed that the American side buy the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline at a meeting in the German Ministry of Economy, The New York Times reported.

Lynch had previously presented this idea to the administration of President Donald Trump. He emphasized that the United States "would like to control the energy infrastructure facility."

Despite years of international tension over the pipeline, he suggested that it could eventually resume operations and supply natural gas to Germany.

Officials in Germany were skeptical of the plan, and the ministry did not respond to a request from The New York Times for comment. Lynch believes that the Germans will want to buy cheap Russian gas again in the future. He believes that transferring the pipeline under the control of an American legal entity will "strengthen Western oversight of the sale of gas from Russia." This will allow Europe to avoid direct deals with Russian companies.

On September 26, 2022, three lines of the Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines were destroyed, as a result of which only one line of Nord Stream 2 survived. It is currently impossible to determine the timing of the restoration of their operability.

Nord Stream 2 is an export gas pipeline from Russia to Europe via the Baltic Sea. The capacity of the two lines of Nord Stream 2 was estimated at 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year.
