Russia Transfers 40 Tu-22M3 Bombers and About 20% of All Tu-95MS to New Airfield

Largest strategic aviation redeployment in recent years

Over the past two weeks, the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) have transferred approximately 40 long-range Tu-22M3 bombers, as well as about 20% of all Tu-95MS aircraft in the country, to the Olenya airfield in the Murmansk region. This is the largest strategic aviation redeployment, according to military expert Evgeny Damantsev.

The Olenya airfield, as one of the most protected and remote, has been chosen to concentrate strategic aviation forces and ammunition. ⠀

Presumably, the bomber can carry up to 80 4.5-Mach Kh-32/22N cruise missiles, 270-350 low-observable strategic Kh-101s + an unknown number of 3M14T/K Kalibr-NK/PL SKRs, long-range tactical Kh-59MK2 and Kh-69 missiles, as well as up to 40 low-observable long-range tactical 9M728 / R-500 Iskander-M/K CRs.

A feature of the Tu-22M3 is the ability to use 4-Mach Kh-22 cruise missiles from low-altitude modes, which significantly reduces the time "window" for engaging trajectories by radar systems of enemy anti-aircraft missile systems.

The Tu-95MS (NATO classification: Bear) is a strategic bomber-missile carrier. It is designed to strike important targets in remote military-geographical areas and in the deep rear of continental theaters of war with conventional and nuclear weapons.

Earlier, www1.ru reported that the manufacturer of the MS-21 and SJ-100 suffered a net loss of 24.1 billion rubles last year.
