Rospotrebnadzor has created a new test system for detecting all genotypes of avian influenza. These tests allow detecting the virus in biological materials in both animals and humans. This was announced by the head of the supervisory authority, Anna Popova.
To identify [avian influenza] as quickly as possible, we are working to ensure that we have tests. We developed tests for H5N1 20 years ago, and we are actively working with them, but given how quickly the situation is changing, colleagues have changed the composition.
As soon as information appears that the virus becomes infectious to humans or changes its pathogenic properties, it is immediately included in an expanded test that detects all possible genotypes.
Popova said that the new testing system allows detecting all types of avian influenza virus. Virus genotypes are added to tests within a few weeks. These tests detect the virus in both humans and animals. All studies conducted by Rospotrebnadzor in Russia are based on a unified testing system, which eliminates errors.
