The United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) at the Baltic Shipyard has started cutting metal for the universal nuclear icebreaker (UAL) "Stalingrad". The icebreaker will be the seventh vessel of Project 22220 built at the enterprise for FSUE Atomflot.
The keel-laying of the vessel is scheduled for 2025, the launch for 2028, and the transfer to the customer for December 2030.
The new Russian nuclear icebreaker of Project 22220 was named "Stalingrad" in honor of the heroic defense of the city of Stalingrad during the Great Patriotic War. The decision on the name was supported by the President of Russia Vladimir Putin.
The task of the Project 22220 icebreakers is to ensure year-round navigation in the western region of the Arctic. The Baltic Shipyard USC has already built and delivered the icebreakers "Arktika", "Sibir", "Ural" and "Yakutia" to the customer. The construction of the icebreakers "Chukotka" and "Leningrad" is ongoing, as well as the multifunctional vessel for nuclear technological service "Vladimir Vorobyov," intended for work on refueling icebreaker reactors.
Main characteristics of the Project 22220 icebreaker:
- Overall length – 173.3 m;
- Width – 34 m;
- Draft – 10.5 m / 9.03 m;
- Power – 60 MW (on shafts);
- Displacement – 33.5 thousand tons;
- Icebreaking capacity – up to 3 m.
