Technology is already being tested: Russian Railways may run unmanned trains on the Moscow-St. Petersburg HSR

The launch dates for driverless locomotives are not yet known

Russian Railways (RZD) has admitted the possibility of launching an unmanned train on the High-Speed Railway (HSR) Moscow — St. Petersburg. This was announced by Evgeny Charkin, Deputy General Director of Russian Railways.

I think that we certainly cannot rule this out. But it is difficult to talk about any time frames here.

Currently, the company has already begun testing unmanned driving systems on Lastochka trains and shunting locomotives.

As a reminder, the launch of the Moscow — St. Petersburg HSR is scheduled for 2028. Trains on this line will be able to reach speeds of up to 400 kilometers per hour, which will significantly reduce travel time between the two largest cities in Russia. The large-scale highway will connect the territories of six regions: Moscow, St. Petersburg, as well as the Moscow, Leningrad, Novgorod and Tver regions.

Earlier www1.ru reported that unmanned freight trains may be created in Russia.
