The Internet Development Institute (IDI) has proposed creating its own platform for BRICS countries to distribute video games, which could become an alternative to the American Steam.
According to IDI experts, the world's largest platform for buying games does not meet modern requirements and does not provide equal partnership for developers from BRICS countries. The new service would establish uniform rules for content distribution, a labeling system, and create a common information space for members of the association.
Anton Gorelkin, Deputy Chairman of the State Duma IT Committee, believes that this is not about creating a new platform from scratch, but about developing existing gaming services. He noted that local platforms such as VK and «Lesta Games» in Russia, Perfect Games and NetEase in China, and Nuuvem in Brazil are already operating in the BRICS countries. In his opinion, the most reasonable step would be to combine the efforts of these platforms, rather than funding a new project at the expense of the Russian budget.
Creating a sovereign ecosystem for digital distribution is a step towards technological independence. A unified BRICS platform would not only provide developers with access to an audience of about 3.5 billion people, but also allow them to develop their own standards in the field of cybersecurity, monetization and data protection.
