Scammers Force YouTube Bloggers to Distribute Hidden Miners in Russia

In a new scam scheme, malware is disguised as tools to bypass blocking

Experts from Kaspersky GreAT have reported an unusual scam scheme. In it, attackers blackmail YouTube bloggers, forcing them to distribute hidden miners among their subscribers.

According to Kaspersky GreAT specialists, more than two thousand people have fallen victim to the scheme, but their real number may be significantly higher.

Attackers send bloggers complaints about their videos, threatening to remove the channel on YouTube under the pretext of copyright infringement. In exchange for "help," they demand the publication of videos with malicious links.

When downloading archives, users unwittingly install a Trojan that downloads SilentCryptoMiner — a hidden miner that uses the power of infected computers to mine cryptocurrency. The scheme threatens not only bloggers, but also their subscribers. Experts emphasize the importance of vigilance on the Internet.
