Moscow is preparing to launch the first driverless train on the Big Circle Line (BCL) of the Moscow Metro. The first phase of the project will start in 2025.
To organize driverless traffic on the BCL, a 5G technology network will be created to provide ultra-fast and reliable communication between trains and infrastructure. This will be a key factor for the safe and efficient operation of the system.
The project has significant potential and will become a platform for new technological solutions. The main priorities remain passenger safety and maintaining the shortest peak-hour headways in the world. After successful implementation of the technology on the BCL, it will be applied to other metro lines as well.
The first city in Russia to introduce driverless transport was St. Petersburg. Since the end of 2022, driverless trams have been operating in the city on two routes in trial operation mode. In May 2024, the first driverless tram was launched in Moscow. It currently carries passengers in experimental mode in the Strogino district.
