Next-Level Deception: Deepfakes Now Used for Romance Scam on Dating Sites

Scammers have refined the fake dating scheme to extort large sums of money from their victims

Scammers have devised a new cunning scheme to swindle money from people before Valentine's Day. It's called a fake date. With the development of artificial intelligence, this deception has become even more sophisticated.

Previously, scammers used generative models to create plausible images, videos, and even voices. Now, they have gone further and are using AI to create a fully generated character for video calls. This character looks and behaves like a real person: blinking, moving their lips, and talking.

We are already aware of 10 such cases with damages exceeding one million rubles each. With the help of AI, attackers can analyze information about the victim, including data from social networks, to create the most plausible deception scenario.

She claims that by 2025, this practice will become even more sophisticated, as neural networks will be able to quickly scan hundreds of thousands of profiles and identify vulnerable users, such as lonely people looking for love.

In addition, attackers have begun to use specialized AI assistants to quickly create "18+" category content. GG Tech IT specialist Sergey Pomortsev noted: This is cheaper and faster than using real people, as it allows you to do without intermediaries. In addition, such content allows you to interest the user and attract their attention to a site with phishing activity.

The press service of the "Mamba" dating service reported that a significant product update occurred in 2024. Not only was a redesign carried out, but also the latest protection and verification technologies were implemented. As the company explained, the service's artificial intelligence effectively filters out a significant portion of unreliable users.

Scammers have come up with a new way to deceive people for Valentine's Day with gifts. For example, they send the victim a bouquet supposedly from a secret admirer, then the attackers ask for a code from an SMS to confirm delivery, but in reality, they gain access to personal data.
