"Aircraft carriers are no longer needed": the appearance of "Oreshnik" has changed the balance of power even at sea

National Interest: the "Oreshnik" missile deprives aircraft carriers of their reason for existence

Russian hypersonic medium-range missiles "Oreshnik" are capable of hitting targets with high accuracy. This allows them to disable aircraft carriers, despite their size and protection, writes The National Interest.

A large and slow aircraft carrier will become an easy target for "Oreshnik". Although the aircraft carrier itself is difficult to destroy, it is not necessary to sink it - it is enough to simply disable it and force it to return to port. An aircraft carrier will always remain a very large and very slowly moving lump of metal floating in the ocean. If it stopped being like that, it would stop being an aircraft carrier.

Journalists have calculated that the cost of producing one "Oreshnik" missile is comparable to the Yars intercontinental ballistic missile, which in 2023 was estimated at approximately $40.3 million.

At that time, the construction of one Nimitz-class aircraft carrier costs the United States $6.2-11.2 billion. Thus, even if you spend up to 50 missiles to destroy one aircraft carrier, their cost will be significantly lower than the price of the ship. At the same time, one "Oreshnik" missile is likely to be enough to destroy an aircraft carrier.

Russian President Vladimir Putin noted that the combat units of "Oreshnik" attack targets at speeds of up to Mach 10, or about 3 km/s, at a range of up to 5,500 km, and Western missile defense systems have no way to intercept them.
