The British Royal Navy deployed a submarine in the English Channel to monitor the Russian oceanographic vessel Yantar. This was announced by the UK Minister of Defence, John Healey, during a speech in the House of Commons of the British Parliament.
The head of the department specified that the Yantar was discovered in the area of "UK underwater infrastructure" in November. A maritime reconnaissance aircraft and several ships were sent to the location "to deter any potential threat."
Healey noted that he had authorized a Royal Navy submarine to surface to show that every action of the Yantar was being monitored.
The ship then left UK waters without delay and headed to the Mediterranean. I will not comment further, but this week the Yantar passed through the English Channel again.
According to Healey, the Yantar is currently in the North Sea after passing through British waters. The minister believes that the vessel is being used to "gather intelligence and map critical underwater infrastructure."
About the Vessel Yantar
The oceanographic research vessel Yantar, Project 22010 "Kruys", was built at the Baltic Shipyard "Yantar". The ship is designed to explore the World Ocean and is equipped with deep-sea manned and autonomous underwater vehicles with the ability to dive up to 6 km.
