MegaFon and Bureau 1440 to Launch Satellite Internet in Remote Regions of Russia

Remote regions of the Russian Federation will gain access to satellite internet from MegaFon

Bureau 1440 and telecom operator MegaFon have signed a cooperation agreement. It will allow subscribers to access new generation satellite internet.

MegaFon is the first federal operator to conclude a comprehensive agreement with Bureau 1440 to connect its base stations to satellite communication channels. This will provide users with a high-quality internet connection, according to the LTE standard, including in remote parts of the country.

The connection of base stations to satellite internet will take place in several stages. First of all, base stations in those regions where laying "optics" is impossible or impractical will be affected. The first stage is planned to be completed in 2027.

We are expanding the LTE coverage area, providing high-quality communication along federal highways, in sparsely populated areas of our country, where laying fiber-optic lines is difficult. These works require an integrated approach, including the use of satellite communications.
Alexey Titov, Technical Director of MegaFon

Deputy General Director for Business Development and Products at Bureau 1440, Dmitry Agafonov, noted that the company's partnership with a large federal telecom operator is an important step towards providing satellite communications throughout Russia.

Residents in remote areas will be able to use modern online services and video conferencing, telemedicine and online education opportunities.

By 2030, Bureau 1410 plans to launch a constellation of 383 satellites, 91 of which will be replaceable. In mid-January 2025, the State Commission on Radio Frequencies approved a roadmap for this constellation.
