"Yakovlev" Releases Instructions for Pilots and Technicians After Plane Crash Near Kolomna

The "Yakovlev" company has developed detailed instructions for aircraft technicians on the correct installation of angle of attack sensors on Superjet-100 aircraft. The proposed measures will help to avoid errors and ensure reliable operation of systems. In addition, pilots received recommendations on how to recognize possible malfunctions with sensors, which will allow them to quickly respond and prevent emergency situations.

According to preliminary data from the IAC, the crash of the SSJ-100 near Kolomna on July 12, 2024, was the result of incorrect installation of two angle of attack sensors during scheduled maintenance at the Lukhovitsky Aircraft Plant. The installation error led to the aircraft's stall protection system not working in a timely manner.

During the climb, the pilots did not have time to recognize the problem and take action, which led to the disaster. There were three crew members on board, all of whom died.

The angle of attack sensor is a device with a flag-vane, which is located on the outside of the aircraft fuselage. The Superjet has four such sensors, two on each side. Their main task is to determine the so-called angle of attack: the angle between the longitudinal axis of the aircraft and the velocity vector.

Specialists from the "Yakovlev" company have prepared instructions to help technicians correctly install the AOA system covers in the aircraft compartments. They should have bright, indelible markings that show exactly where the device should be located.

Rosaviatsiya, in its directive, strongly recommended that aircraft operators take these measures to prevent similar disasters, such as the one that occurred with the SSJ-100.

Preventive measures were required for SSJ-100 aircraft with imported avionics and engines. The United Aircraft Corporation noted that new aircraft created using domestic technologies will be equipped with Russian avionics with secure AOA fasteners.

The design of domestic sensors of the import-substituted SSJ-100 initially differs from imported ones installed on the basic version of the aircraft, due to a different manufacturer. Their compliance with aviation norms and rules is confirmed during the certification flight tests currently underway.

The "Yakovlev" company has also prepared a bulletin containing clear recommendations for pilots on actions in case of incorrect operation of duplicate aviation instruments at various stages of flight.

In December 2024, Rosaviatsiya held a meeting with operators of Russian Superjet 100 and the new General Director of UAC Vadim Badeha. Currently, 154 such aircraft carry out commercial passenger transportation. Their maintenance is monitored by specialists from 29 organizations.

Earlier, Rosaviatsiya reported on the increase in the number of aviation incidents in 2024, with the largest increase occurring in helicopter flights.
