Russian diesel-electric submarines of Project 636 «Varshavyanka» were nicknamed «Black Holes» due to the difficulty of detecting them. The advantages of the submarines were listed in a material by the American publication 19FortyFive.
First introduced in the early 1980s, these diesel-electric submarines are distinguished by their stealth, reliability, and adaptability.
Journalists noted that Russia is producing modernized Project 636.3 submarines, featuring modern weapons, a more powerful and low-noise power plant, and improved sonar systems.
The submarines of Project 636.3 are armed with six 533 mm torpedo tubes, and the ammunition includes 18 torpedoes or 24 mines, and Kalibr-PL cruise missiles. The use of sound-absorbing elements ensures high stealth of the submarine.
Tactical and technical characteristics of Project 636.3:
- Submarine length — 73.8 m; width — 9.9 m, draft — 6.2 m
- Surface displacement — 2,350 tons, underwater — 3,100 tons
- Maximum immersion depth — up to 300 m
- Surface speed — 17 knots, underwater — up to 20 knots
- Navigation autonomy — 45 days
- Crew — 52 people
