Gamers Under Surveillance: Russia Plans to Introduce Identification of Computer Game Users

New document to be submitted to the State Duma for consideration in the near future

Deputies have prepared a bill that will oblige digital platforms to inform users about the content of video games. The document also requires publishers to identify players using a mobile number or through the "Gosuslugi" portal. The document will be submitted to the State Duma for consideration in the near future.

According to the proposal, owners of video game distribution services will have to provide a technical capability to inform users about the content of games. Gamers are planned to be warned about the presence of "swear words", images of cruelty and other frightening elements in the game.

When authorizing users, video game distributors will be required to identify them through a subscriber number, the Unified Identification and Authentication System (ESIA) or the Unified Biometric System. The authors of the bill also propose to conduct an examination of video games to identify prohibited information.

All distributors of video games, regardless of the country of production, will have to identify users. Therefore, the innovation may also affect the popular services of popular platforms Steam and GOG.

However, experts have expressed concern that the new requirements may put Russian developers at a disadvantage compared to foreign companies that may continue to sell games without connecting to the ESIA.

Earlier www1.ru reported that in Russia proposed to create a database of biometric data of telephone scammers.
