Tomsk State University of Control Systems and Radioelectronics (TUSUR) has developed innovative thermoregulating coatings to improve the operation of spacecraft. This was reported by the university's press service.

The new nano-coatings are made of calcium silicate (CaSiO3) and calcium carbonate (CaCO3) modified with cerium dioxide (CeO2).

The main disadvantage of traditional coatings based on unmodified СаSiO3 and СаCO3 powders is their instability under irradiation. This leads to darkening and a decrease in reflectivity. The problem was solved by introducing nanoparticles into the pigment composition to stabilize the coating structure.

According to researchers, such pigments can be used to create coatings for building walls in hot countries that are resistant to sunlight and in the production of ceramics for use in nuclear reactors and X-ray machines. In addition, new coatings may be in demand for protecting tanks and equipment for storing and transporting petroleum products.
