Soviet heavy nuclear-powered missile cruisers of Project 1144 "Orlan" had the main task of confronting the United States Navy. This is stated in an article in the American magazine The National Interest.
Observer Brandon Weichert noted that the cruisers looked more like monsters from ancient mythology than warships.
Armed to the teeth and bristling with weapons, they had one mission: if war ever broke out between the United States and the USSR, these steel leviathans would hunt down American aircraft carriers and sink them before they could pose a real threat to Soviet assets.
Project 1144 "Orlan" are highly autonomous cruisers, the only surface ships with nuclear power plants in the Russian Navy.
