The head of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Alexander Khinshtein, announced that the image of the Russian flag in the lower right corner of the car license plate will become mandatory by the end of 2024. Corresponding changes will be made to GOST.
The initiative arose after one of the subscribers of Khinshtein's Telegram channel asked him to close the possibility of obtaining license plates without a flag, calling this option a loophole for those who do not respect the state. In response to this appeal, Khinshtein sent a proposal to the Main Directorate for Road Traffic Safety. By May, the Ministry of Internal Affairs had already prepared an amendment to GOST.
Currently, car license plates with a flag are issued upon registration of vehicles in the traffic police, but the flag can be excluded from the design by ordering a license plate from a private company and paying an additional fee of 300–500 rubles. With the entry into force of the changes, this option will be excluded, and the presence of the tricolor will become mandatory for all Russian license plates.
