Exactly 35 years ago, on November 1, 1989, a landmark event occurred in the history of Russian aviation and the navy — land-based aircraft landed on the deck of a Russian aircraft-carrying cruiser for the first time.
The first landing on the deck was made by test pilot of the Sukhoi Design Bureau, Hero of the Soviet Union Viktor Pugachev. After that, Soviet pilots also took off from the deck of the heavy aircraft-carrying cruiser "Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Kuznetsov." Thus, on November 1, 1989, the creation of a full-fledged naval aviation of the Russian Navy began.
Today, the Russian naval aviation group consists of two regiments, armed with Su-33, Su-25UTG, MiG-29KUB and MiG-29K.
The cruiser "Admiral Kuznetsov" has been undergoing repairs and modernization at the 35th Ship Repair Plant of the "Zvezdochka Ship Repair Center" since 2017, which is part of the USC). The commissioning date is at the end of 2024.
The ship is receiving a completely new interior, a new deck with a ski jump, a new navigation system, new cable routes, a new power plant, and a new control system for the takeoff and landing of naval aviation.
Currently, Russian military pilots, in order not to lose their skills in landing and taking off from the only aircraft carrier in Russia, as they did 35 years ago, are training at the "Nitka" complex.
Earlier, www1.ru reported that the protection of Russian Tor air defense systems has been strengthened. They received screens made of armored steel five millimeters thick, which protect the system's hull.
