A group of scientists from Russia and Belarus, including specialists from the National Research Center "Kurchatov Institute," has developed an innovative concept for a detector for remote monitoring of nuclear power plants. The technology is based on the registration of antineutrino radiation. This was reported in the press service of the university.
The created phoswich detector consists of two materials. They are capable of emitting light when exposed to ionizing radiation — special plastic and a new compound based on lithium calcium silicate. The plastic serves as a target for antineutrinos, and each of the detector materials registers its products of the antineutrino reaction with protons — neutrons and annihilation gamma quanta.
The result obtained creates opportunities for the development of compact antineutrino radiation detectors. They are important for remote monitoring of nuclear power plants, as the antineutrino method is the only non-falsifiable way to "look inside" a nuclear reactor
The development can also be used as the basis for dosimeters to determine alpha and beta particles.
Earlier, www1.ru reported that KMZ has improved the lifting mechanism used at nuclear power plants.
