More than 5,000 couriers cooperating with Yandex services will be able to use the company's new electric bicycles. The first version of the electric bicycle was introduced a year ago, and now Yandex has released a large, refined batch. For the convenience of couriers, the company will open a network of bicycle centers where they can rent and service vehicles. The first points are already operating in Moscow, and by the end of the year, more will be opened in nine other cities in Russia.
The electric bicycle was developed to make the delivery process more comfortable and safe. The new version takes into account the wishes of couriers who tested the model while delivering orders. Thus, the kickstand was reinforced, the shock absorber became more durable and softer, which allows it to withstand low temperatures down to -30ºC. The polyurethane tube in the wheels eliminates the risk of punctures. Hooks appeared on the handlebars for convenient placement of bulky orders, the size of the trunk was increased, and the fixation of the thermal box was simplified. In addition, the headlight light was divided into high and low beams, and the throttle trigger was made more reliable.
The electric bicycle is specially designed for couriers, taking into account their needs. It is equipped with a trunk for a thermal bag, a USB port for charging a smartphone, and additional protection against splashes. A safe battery and a special IoT module control movement, monitoring compliance with traffic rules and preventing speeding. All data on location and charge level is available to couriers through the application.
Yandex is actively involved in courier safety issues. Services teach them traffic rules, providing uniforms with reflective elements for better visibility in the dark. Initiatives are also being implemented to improve courier safety. For example, special "pit stops" for repairing and cleaning bicycles have been installed near Yandex Lavka darkstores. In large cities, there are bicycle assistants who monitor compliance with traffic rules and provide advice to delivery drivers.
